HOOLIGAN HENS

Pest Control Visits

The Chickens:
Our chickens live free range lives outside of the city but travel in style to come eat your pests. They specialize in slugs but will eat just about anything they can find. The main breed we use are Silkies (pictured) because they are small and gentle on garden produce and don't fly so are easy to corral. We also have Americaunas and Buff Orpingtons in our flock. We've been expirementing with crossing silkies with our Orpington and Americaunas and have some interesting looking chickens as a result.

Pest Control Time Frame:
Normally we recommend a few visits of at least 1.5 hrs to allow for set up and proper pest patrol. After 2 hrs the chickens settle in and lose their drive so a return visit can always be scheduled if pests are still present. Most households see marked improvement after the first visit but will see slugs return so we recommend at least 3 visits. Many households have us visit all season and we are looking forward to seeing the results of multiple season pest control.

For the safety of the chickens:
  • Please make sure that your yard is pesticide/herbicide free for at least 2 months and non-organic fertilizer free for 2 weeks
  • Any pets should be contained inside for the duration of the visit
  • Please notify us of fencing or lack thereof

Cost:
We have had to raise our costs! One of our biggest expenses is fuel, which went up significantly this year. The first visit is $60 and the following visits are $50. This higher 1st fee accounts for a site assessment of new locations. As always, we will be offering the second fee to all repeat clients.

If you would like to book a visit longer than 2 hrs then an additional $5/hr is charged.

Also, please note that if the price is the only thing standing in the way of a chicken visit please message us and we will do everything we can to accommodate a sliding scale of incomes.

COVID:
Rest assured that we will come symptom free, don masks if needed, and maintain distance outside.

Birthday or Educational Visits

We have been approached more and more to come and bring chickens for events or education. We LOVE this idea. As with everything new, the how is sort of evolving but we are a homeschooling family that is always buried in educational projects and we love the opportunity to bring this sense of wonder to your family!

Please contact us and let us know what sort of visit you have in mind and we'd be happy to figure something out that would work for you.

In the past we have done an hr to 1.5 hr visit for $100 (additional time $50/hr) where we explore candling eggs to determine if they are fertilized, looking at different breeds of chicken's feathers under a microscope, reading books about what types of animals lay eggs and their variations, and more! There is never any age limit for learning!
